I will be reading excerpts from The Horsepower Whisperer at Steampunk Summer 2012 at Woodland Valley Farm, Ladock near Truro this Saturday (September 1st) and talking about my work. I might even read some of The Wormton Lamb, too.

Tickets are available from Limelight in Truro and Tanya's Courage Trust in Penzance.

It's not just me, you understand, there's also a huge line up of steam punk activities and something like a dozen bands. Should be brilliant if previous ones are anything to go by....

Tempted? It was during a rather ribald discussion with some of my motor cycling friends that the question arose -- what is the motorcycling equivalent of an Austin Allegro? My Austin Allegro is a particularly nice example but that doesn't stop them taking the piss out of it. I know that it is not one of the world's greatest cars and some people voted these chubby little cars the worst ones of all time but I like to point out that much of the Allegro's vital organs are shared with the Mini, which, at about the same time, was voted the greatest car of all time. It seems odd to me that two cars with the same engine, gearbox and the clutch from the same manufacturer, and with suspension systems that follow the same damperless and space saving concept, could be both the best and the worst between them. 95th Exeter Trial 2025

Arkley-MG all set for the 95th Exeter This year’s event saw me entered again as part of the Team Inappropriate massseeve but also I had chosen as my running chumrades those dirt -dashing do-badders from downtown Doublebois, Adrian Booth and Darren Wilton in Age’s Triumph TR2. Add in Age’s sister Gill and her beau, Pat, in Katy the MX5 and I felt comfortably surrounded my fellow enthusiasts. In the navigator’s seat for the first time was my belle, Sally Livsey. Sal was supposed to have been with me on the Camel Classic but had been ill. How she would find an overnight, long-distance classic trial in January would soon be revealed. I had also volunteered to be a travelling marshal, despite many of my trialling viewing this as a kiss-of-death if I hoped to actually finish any event. 2024 Camel Classic

  At the start of this year's Camel Classic, l to r, Simon Oates' Liege, Aaron Haizelden's John Deere Special, Emma Wall's Troll and the VW Special of Adrian and George Marfell For this year’s Camel Classic, the lovely Sally was to have been my passenger. We have entered the forthcoming Exeter Trial and had thought of a gentle drive out in the country with the Arkley-MG to get used to things. Instead, we entered the Camel Classic, which is nothing like a gentle drive out. At least, she would be able to experience tree roots motorsport at first hand and see the sort of sections we could expect. The first hills on the Exeter would be hidden by darkness. Perhaps that might be helpful. The sections on the Camel Classic are spectacular to the point of intimidating and I knew there would be a lot of reversing back down again.  Anyway, poor Sally developed a shocking cold a few days beforehand and had been in bed for three days before the Camel Classic.
