Vintage Thing No.79 - Shaw Velo
This post is more of a request for more info. Many years ago at a long forgotten location I took these photos of this special. Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of the info presented alongside this bike since this was back in the days before I had my digital camera and had to be a bit more discriminating about what I snapped before the inevitable happened and I ran out of film.
All I know is this.
I spotted the Shaw Velo at a show up country and Netley Marsh near Southampton suggests itself only because some other photos in the pile that harboured these images suggested they might have have been taken at Netley Marsh.
The engine is an ohv Velocette and the frame has plunger rear suspension with Earles-type leading link forks.
Best of all, though, are the cable operated twin front discs!
The black and white photos that accompanied the thoughtfully provided info are of the bike in competition. If nobody out there can't satisfy my curiosity, I'll approach the Old Bike Mart.

The oil tank doesn't quite fit the lines of the frame but then neither does the seat - it actually looks quite comfy |
Hello, noticed this post and I would like to say I actually have owned this machine for quite a number of years , it has an impecable race history and raced amongs some of the best riders of the early years.
ReplyDeleteI am collecting a archive of facts if you have anything please post.
Hello, I am an artist and working on an image of this wonderful machine. Can you please tell me, is the seat shown here the original seat? Loooking at the Bonhams saleroom photographs the seat looks modern. Was the seat originally brown and just been reproduced? best regards Bernard Allum www.motorcyclearts.com
ReplyDeleteAnyone able to help Bernard in his quest for answers?
DeleteI am looking at you Anonymous! (You wondering now how I can do that now, arntcha?)
Hi still looking for older photographs of this bike, any photos in the paddock, I am about to do the seat, might just take a reference from another racer of the period, the modern seat spoils the look. Any help would be appreciatted.
